Ingram Micro, a leading distributor of hardware and software to the IT industry, experienced a ransomware attack earlier this month that caused significant outages and disruptions to its systems and customer services.
The attack which initially occurred on July 3rd, compromised the company’s ability to process and fulfill orders and manage software licenses. The company is making strides in restoring operations to normal but is still experiencing problems impacting normal customer operations.
Ingram Micro is one of the world’s largest business-to-business providers of technology solutions including hardware, software, and cloud services to IT managed service providers worldwide.
The attack on Ingram Micro was revealed to be ransomware, a type of malware that locks up computer files and demands payment for their release. It is being attributed to the SafePay ransomware operation, which has become one of the more active cyber groups in 2025.
The attack was reportedly started through a breach of the company’s VPN gateway, a typical access point for cybercriminals.
Ingram Micro’s internal systems were impacted, including its AI-powered platforms and impulse license provisioning, all of which are crucial for customer order fulfillment and overall partner services.
The end result is customers have been experiencing difficulties and delays in order processing, shipment backlogs, and disruptions to software licensing including Microsoft 365.
As a first response, Ingram Micro took affected systems offline in an effort to contain the attack. It has been working to restore systems and services including transactional business operations.
While some services, including the ability to place orders for some products and subscriptions have been restored, limitations remain in place for hardware and other technology orders.
The company has stated that it is continuing to investigate the scope of the attack and its impact on customers and partners.
