OpenAI is reportedly set to release an AI-powered web browser in the coming weeks that will directly compete with Alphabet’s Google Chrome. The new search engine intends to use artificial intelligence to impact and change how people browse the internet.

Chrome plays a significant role in harvesting and analyzing user data to help Alphabet target ads more effectively and properly. It is responsible for nearly three-quarters of Alphabet’s revenue. Chrome’s role is so lucrative that the Justice Department has demanding its divestiture after a U.S. judge ruled that the Google parent holds an unlawful monopoly on searching.

OpenAI browser would put pressure on Google Chrome

A new web browser such as the one proposed by OpenAI, and backed by OpenAI’ resources, could put significant pressure on Google’s dominance of the search marketplace. Currently, ChatGPT has a base of roughly 500 million active weekly users.

OpenAI’s browser is designed to keep some user interactions within a ChatGPT-like native chat interface instead of having to click through to websites. The browser would also allow OpenAI to directly integrate its AI agent products into the browsing experience, enabling the browser to carry out tasks on behalf of the user.

Entrepreneur Sam Altman launched ChatGPT is 2022 to great success, but it has faced stiff competition from Google and Anthropic among others. It’s been looking for new growth outlets.

According to analytics firm StatCounter, Google Chrome is currently used by more than 3 billion people and owns over two-thirds of the worldwide browser market. Apple’s Safari is second place with a 16% share.

Last month, OpenAI said it had 3 million paying business users for ChatGPT.

Perplexity with its AI browser, Comet, The Browser Company with its Brave browser, Edge, and Opera are all also players in the increasingly crowded field.
